Jerry F. Boone

Jerry Boone is an award-winning motorsports journalist whose writing and photos have been featured in The Oregonian newspaper and such magazines as Stock Car Racing, Circle Track, Classic Motorsports, Model T and on ESPN.com.

He also authored Mark Martin: The Racer’s Racer, which was released by MB Publishing in 2005.

His newspaper and magazine work has won numerous gold awards in the International Automotive Media Competition, along with entries judged for silver and bronze awards.

Jerry is different than most motorsports writers in that when it comes to racing, he knows more than just the right words.

An amateur sports car racer, he has won two regional racing championships in the Sports Car Club of America and one in the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs. He has been crew chief for three trips to the SCCA National Runoffs and a member of a team that raced a Winston West car at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan.

He also is crew chief on a big, V-8 powered stock car that has been converted for endurance racing on road courses.

On the business side of racing, he took on promotion responsibilities for a successful NASCAR Camping World West Series event at Portland International Raceway, including appearances by racing legend Hershel McGriff and Sprint Cup star Greg Biffle.

In addition to motorsports activities, he’s owned more than 50 cars in his lifetime, ranging from an exotic AC Aceca to a tiny NSU Prinz. He currently is bringing back to life a 1972 Lotus Europa.

He retired in December 2007 after 42 years as a newspaper journalist, ending a career that spanned all phases of the business from reporter to managing editor to metro columnist.

Retirement has allowed him to concentrate on working on and writing about automobiles and the people who are passionate about them.

Mark Martin: The Racer’s Racer
Motorbooks, Paperback, 2006-05-31
Mark Martin is a racer’s racer: a tough, tenacious driver whose professionalism and dedication comes through race after race. Coming heartbreakingly close to winning a Cup championship four times, he is a NASCAR fan favorite because of his easygoing demeanor and competitive, clean driving style.
Mark Martin: The Racer’s Racer is the most up-to-date illustrated chronicle of Mark’s long, illustrious driving career-from the days he learned to drive in his dad’s company trucks to his early ASA races and eventual teaming with Jack Roush. With interviews from Mark, his sister Glenda, and the crew chief from Mark’s rookie season, Stock Car Racing magazine contributor Jerry F. Boone reveals how a kid from Batesville, Arkansas, became one of the world’s top stock car drivers with 35 Cup wins and 5 IROC championships. Photographs from veteran shooters Dick Conway, Nigel Kinrade, and the Stock Car Racing archives follow Martin’s journey, and driver No. 6’s complete Cup race statistics are also included.
